DESCRIPTION Expert practitioners are vital in the process of training and professional development of newly qualified professionals as well as the smooth day to day functioning of a health service. However expert health care professionals are relatively expensive resources, and therefore it is important to consider how expert nurses' contribution to high quality care can be articulated and how professionals can defend their expertise. This study unit will enable practitioners to reflect upon the developmental progression of an individual practitioner from being a novice to becoming an expert nurse. It will also develop a critical debate about the concept of expertise and expert practice, as well as how the pathway from novice to expert impacts on the health care organisation.

Study-unit Aims

The aim of this study unit is to enable practitioners to critically examine concepts such as expertise, competence, excellence, quality and professionalism in health care.
