DESCRIPTION This study-unit focuses on professional issues relating to a variety of health care professions. It is delivered in a flexible manner comprising of a combination of lectures, online tutorials and self-directed learning. The study-unit serves to help practitioners develop critical thinking, reading and writing skills by focusing on particular leadership issues that exist within their own workplace setting. The flexible nature of the study-unit requires that students enrolling into this unit have a strong sense of discipline and self-directed learning abilities in order to be successful in completing the study unit requirements.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit enables practitioners to acquire knowledge and develop their own leadership skills. Each clinical specialty consists of practitioners involved in direct patient care as well as managers who ensure the day to day functioning of the ward/unit/department. Practitioners are increasingly being seen as an important way to develop health care services to address the needs of patients through good quality and efficient cost effective services. Effective leadership has been identified as one of the essential building blocks in successful health care delivery. The specific aim of this study-unit is to introduce students to the concept of clinical leadership by drawing on recent understandings of how efficient and effective organizations function. The specific aim of this study-unit is to enable practitioners to focus on the leadership and management issues influencing their own clinical specialty as well as develop their own leadership competencies and skills.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- define leadership;
- distinguish between leadership and management;
- critically describe and compare the key leadership theories;
- define and discuss the role of informal leaders in clinical practice; and
- describe the characteristics of effective leaders.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- apply leadership skills to their own setting;
- develop a personal vision of leadership;
- reflect upon their individual personal attributes in relation to developing leadership potential;
- demonstrate the ability to access, retrieve and utilize evidence appropriately; and
- demonstrate a commitment to care involving service users, carers and significant others.
