| DESCRIPTION |
This study-unit is targeted at first year student midwives to give them an understanding of medical and surgical conditions that could be present while caring for pregnant women. Medical conditions include hypertension, diabetes, cardiac disease, renal problems and haemoglinopathies. Surgical conditions include abdominal pain, hypovolaemic shock, pre-, intra-, and post- operative care.
Study-unit Aims:
The aim of this study-unit is to help students recognise and understand medical and surgical conditions that could occur during the perinatal period.
Learning Outcomes:
1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- an understanding of medical and surgical conditions that may be present during the perinatal period, an understanding of medical and surgical investigations, management and treatment of these conditions, and an understanding of the general principles of pre, intra and post operative care.
