DESCRIPTION Learning Objectives:

By the end of the study unit the student will:

- Be knowledgeable on educational principle of adult learning;
- Be knowledgeable of teaching strategies of adults learners;
- Be able to explore the different learning needs of women, their partner and family;
- Be able to structure a program of learning on the needs of women and their partners who are planning or are in the process of becoming parents.

Content:

- Introduction to educational Theories; Behaviourists; cognitive; social leaning theories; humanistic theories.

- Principles of adult education.

- Teaching Strategies for adult learners: lecture format; seminars; presentations; discussion; Q&A; role plays;
- Factors affecting learning;
- Sources of knowledge;
- Planning education encounters in preparation for parenthood:
    - Health in pregnancy;
    - Preparation for childbirth;
    - The immediate postnatal period;
    - Adaptation to motherhood and fatherhood;
    - Psychosocial and emotional support;
    - Family responsibilities;
    - Communication skills;
    - Coping skills;
    - Stress management;
    - Negotiating and conflict resolution.
