DESCRIPTION Through the use of lectures, demonstration of skills and hands on practice in a clinical laboratory setting, students will gain an understanding of fundamental clinical skills related to the activities of daily living and will be able to perform these fundamental skills under supervision. This unit will include a practical component in the clinical simulated environment (Labs).

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit will help students gain an understanding of fundamental clinical skills related to the activities of daily living.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Attain knowledge of fundamental clinical skills;
- Relate the practice of clinical skills to anatomy and physiology; and
- Link theoretical knowledge to the performance of clinical skills.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Ensure clinical hand hygiene and proper use of non-sterile gloves and aprons;
- Assist a patient with personal cleansing and dressing;
- Assist a patient with eating and drinking;
- Care for a patient with an NGT and a PEG;
- Care for a patient with a urinary catheter;
- Perform skin care and pressure sore prevention;
- Lift and move patients;
- Adequately assist an aseptic procedure;
- Apply a spiral and a figure-of-eight bandage;
- Measure Temperature, Pulse, Respirations and Automatic Blood Pressure;
- Document findings from vital signs on appropriate charts.
