DESCRIPTION During this first clinical placement, the nursing student will observe and carry out fundamental/basic nursing skills under constant supervision by qualified nurses. Practice will take place in both the clinical skills laboratories as well as the clinical settings in all health care entities.

Study-Unit Aims:

By the end of this first clinical placement, the student will achieve the required level of competence, as specified in the practice portfolio.

The student will be introduced to clinical settings in view of experiencing the role of the health care worker in such settings; the various aspects of care delivery will be observed in the respective settings.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Identify own personal learning needs;
- Identify own limitations;
- Identify broad learning needs relating to a clinical setting;
- Acknowledge personal and professional boundaries.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Distinguish between social interaction and professional communication;
- Communicate effectively with members of the health care team;
- Demonstrate awareness about the use of verbal and non verbal methods of communication;
- Differentiate between the various roles of the health care team;
- Maintain confidentiality at all times.

ADDITIONAL NOTES Should a student be required to sit for a supplementary assessment for this the study-unit, he/she will need to complete a four-week placement in August.
