DESCRIPTION This study-unit introduces students to the pathophysiological changes that can impact cardiovascular health. It provides an introduction to cardiac nursing care and related anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, nutrition. The safe and effective nursing care of patients with conditions and illnesses associated with the cardiovascular systems is a key focus of this unit.

Study-Unit Aims:

- Provide students with an introduction to anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology with a focus on the cardiovascular system;
- Introduce students to pharmacology and pharmacokinetics;
- Introduce students to the importance of nutrition in relation to an individual's health and in the management of cardiovascular disease;
- Ensure an understanding of the care of persons with cardiovascular problems including the physical, psychosocial and spiritual care provided;
- Ensure an understanding of the impact of chronic and acute illness and hospitalization on the individual and his/her family from a psychological, social and financial point of view.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe the anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system;
- Show an understanding of the pathophysiology of disorders of the cardiovascular system;
- Show an understanding of the nutritional advice that should be provided to individuals to prevent cardiovascular disease and control existing cardiovascular disease;
- Describe the normal function of the lymphoid system and how it responds to microbes, infection and injury;
- Show an understanding of the care of persons.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Provide health education advice to clients to the prevention of coronary artery disease and hypertension and management of existing cardiovascular problems;
- Provide holistic care to patients with cardiovascular disorders, including myocardial infarction and heart failure and persons undergoing cardiac catheterization and pacemaker insertion;
- Interpret ECGs and identify the common cardiac arrhythmias;
- Identify the normal function of the cardiovascular system and the nursing practice considerations related to associated cardiovascular conditions;
- Respond appropriately to the psychosocial needs of persons experiencing acute/chronic illness and requiring hospitalization.
