DESCRIPTION The unit introduces the principles of primary health care and environmental health, highlighting the roles of health professionals within these two disciplines. Lectures include discussions on a holistic and multisectorial approach to health care; a definition of primary health care based on a definition suggested by the World Health Organization; the principles of prevention (primary, secondary and tertiary) in health care services; primary health care settings; specialist nursing roles within the primary care service set-up; and environmental health issues.

Study-unit Aims:

To introduce the concept of Primary Health Care as outlined by the W.H.O;

To identify the role and functions of all social sectors in providing primary health care services;

To identify roles and functions of the primary health care team, with emphasis on nursing provision within different sectors of Primary Health Care;

To raise awareness about environmental determinants to public health, outlining main sources of environmental hazards, their influence on health and possible means of prevention.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Understand the principles of the Health for All policy framework;
Understand and define the concept of primary health care;
Be aware of the primary health care services in Malta;
Define the role of the primary health care team;
Identify settings for community nursing;
Understand the principles and challenges of environmental health including health housing, food safety and hygiene, water management, waste management and atmospheric pollution.

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills):
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Apply basic concepts of primary care nursing to different community care settings;
Apply basic principles of environmental health during patient education, patient assessment and organisation of community services, when working in the community setting.
