| DESCRIPTION |
This study-unit will incorporate:
1. Revision of the communication process and the dynamics of the nurse-patient relationship; 2. Psychological interpretations of patient behaviour; 3. Basic Counselling skills: Empathy, Unconditional positive regard, Genuineness; Summarising; Reflecting; 4. Management of self and others – communication within team work; 5. Planning personal and professional development; 6. Job Interviewing Skills Theory; 7. Developing Competence and Integrity at work; 8. Handling emotions: fear and anger; 9. Anxiety Management; 10. Conflict Management – Providing constructive feedback; 11. Complimentary and alternative therapies; 12. Financial Management.
Study-unit Aims:
This study-unit builds on the learning outcomes achieved in Personal and Professional Development 1. Hence the aims of these credits enable students to:
Highlight plans for future career development; and Review the range of existing communication skills required for use in clinical practice, both with patients and work colleagues. Hence, this study-unit explores further the use of therapeutic communication and basic counselling skills with patients and their relatives; and address interpersonal concepts that enhance the effective teamwork such as managing emotions and conflict management.
This study-unit also gives students the opportunity to think on their plans for the future and give them skills that help them engage in further personal and professional development.
Learning Outcomes:
1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- show awareness about the counselling process; - identify ways for future professional development; - understand the possible psychological considerations for patient behaviour; - develop knowledge about financial management that can impact both one's personal development and in relation to one's participation at work; - develop knowledge and awareness about alternative therapies.
2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills): By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- develop a therapeutic relationship with patients and relatives; - evaluate one's interpersonal skills as a health care professional; - participate and communicate effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team; - develop competence at work; - reflect on and identify one's coping skills in view of one's emotions; - reflect on and identify one's ways of coping with anxiety; - present and prepare oneself well for a job interview.
