TITLE Foundations of the Nursing Profession

DESCRIPTION This study-unit will introduce components and concepts in nursing care and also introduces first year students to academic reading and writing. Furthermore, such students will also be informed about the ethical and legal aspects in nursing.

This study-unit incorporates the following topics:
- The nature of nursing;
- The Nursing process and individualized nursing care;
- Using a problem solving approach to care;
- The psychological and sociological implications in nursing practice;
- Therapeutic relationship, communication, listening, respect;
- Core care concepts: caring, hope, trust, etc;
- Concepts of transcultural nursing and factors contributing to transcultural care;
- Concepts of spirituality in health care;
- Academic reading and writing; and how to set up a power point presentation.

Study-unit Aims:

The main aim of this study-unit is to introduce students to the principles of nursing the individual with different health needs within a variety of care settings. This will be achieved through:

- The introduction of theoretical principles underpinning nursing practice;
- Exploring aspects of psychology and sociology;
- Introduction to the concepts of professionalism and of interprofessional working practice;
- Exploring legal and ethical frameworks in the light of the concepts of professionalism and interprofessional working;
- The discussion of transcultural nursing concepts and theories;
- The discussion of the concepts of spirituality in health care; and
- The introduction to the use of technology and informatics in nursing.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Define profession, professionalism, interprofessional working and explore the role of statutory bodies including the regulation of professional practice/conduct;
- Demonstrate in-depth knowledge about the roles and responsibilities of health and social care professionals within the context of interprofessional working;
- Explain the key ethical and legal theories, highlighting principles that guide professional behaviour and practice among nurses and other health and social professionals;
- Demonstrate knowledge about the use of technology and informatics in nursing; and
- Define core concepts in care such as caring, hope and trust.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Explain how individualized care may be planned in the light of the various theoretical perspective in nursing;
- Explain the use of a problem solving approach to care;
- Explain and critically discuss theoretical concepts of transcultural nursing;
- Explain and critically discuss the concepts related to spirituality; and
- Critically analyse the concepts of the nature of nursing.
