The unit is designed around the three aims of emergency care, namely preserve life, prevent worsening of the condition and promote recovery, which determine the objectives to be met during the course, as appropriate at a basic level of first aid.

A list of topics to be covered:

- Immediate Care of the casualty with an altered level of response;
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillation;
- Immediate Care in sudden illness;
- Immediate Care for bleeding, shock and traumatic emergencies;
- Immediate Care in environmental emergencies; and
- Serious incidents, multiple casualty and disaster situations.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims at helping students familiarise themselves with the principles of emergency care for sudden illness and serious injury leading to hypoxia, shock and problems with thermoregulation.

This study-unit will also coach students in the basic emergency skills required to assess, establish and maintain adequate ventilatory, circulatory and neurological status in a seriously ill or injured person, and environmental control.

Learning Outcomes:

1.Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
