DESCRIPTION This is a taught study-unit involving 14 lectures of 2 hour duration each. The lectures would be about the following topics:

- Mental health and mental illness;
- Stigma;
- Various psychiatric disorders e.g. mood disorders, psychosis, anxiety and personality disorders;
- Care of persons suffering from the above mentioned disorders;
- Psychiatric treatment;
- Care of the elderly mentally ill;
- Care of the mentally ill child;
- Therapeutic relationship.

Study-unit Aims:

The aims of this study unit are to:

- enable students increase awareness of self and others;
- expose undergraduate general nursing students to issues surrounding the subject of mental illness;
- diffuse fear and stigma of the mentally ill people;
- give them basic understanding of what is mental illness and who are the mentally ill people;
- help students adapt what they learn in this study unit to their general nursing practice;
- teach students care for people with psychological / mental health problems;
- enable students develop communication skills.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- View people suffering from mental health problems positively;
- Identify the principles and models of communication;
- Identify the concepts of mental health and mental ill health;
- Describe key psychiatric conditions and their associated nursing care;
- Discuss stigma and its effect on mental illness and mentally ill people;
- Discuss the psychosocial needs of mentally ill people.

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills):
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Communicate effectively with persons suffering from psychological problems;
- Deliver holistic care to people going through psychological suffering;
- Encourage mentally ill people to be independent in performing activities of daily living;
- Describe documentation procedures used in a psychiatric hospital;
- Assess for and prevent aggression in patients;
- Assess for and prevent self-harming behaviours in patients;
- Participate in rehabilitation interventions of patients (ward activities and outings);
- Participate in teaching patients;
- Self-awareness in order to provide appropriate nursing care.
