DESCRIPTION This study-unit comprises the present and future of cancer nursing, common ethical issues in cancer care, developments in cancer treatments, including complementary therapy and patient responses, the illness trajectory and the different contexts of care provision - a multidisciplinary approach to care, the major cancers and the specialist services available, identify the assessment of, and the nursing interventions related to cancer and treatment-related symptoms, the concept of survivorship and the impact of cancer and cancer care on nurses.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to introduce student nurses to the principles of oncology nursing care.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate an awareness of the challenges that health care professionals face when caring for patients with cancer.
- Critically discuss common ethical issues in cancer care and the implications of these for nursing practice.
- Demonstrate an awareness of major cancer therapies, with an emphasis on new developments and complementary care and the implications of these for nursing.
- Identify the patient and family needs, specific to various stages of the cancer journey and related nursing interventions.
- Critically analyse the concept of survivorship and the implications for nursing practice.
- Explore and reflect on personal responses to caring for patients with cancer and identify self-care measures.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Through the process of reflection, assess how the challenges that they face affect their perceptions of, and subsequent care provision to patients with cancer and their families.
- Demonstrate the ability to analyse current practices in relation to patient needs.
