DESCRIPTION This study-unit builds on Primary/Community Health Care content covered during the first year of the course, and aims to help students develop further understanding of Public Health care as an approach towards providing conditions necessary for healthy living. It helps students appreciate the extent by which health care goes beyond that which is provided at the bedside and the strategic challenges involved in administering public health care.

The unit identifies Public Health methods which are used to address determinants of health, maintaining a focus on ‘health care’ and empowerment of communities and populations. The major focus of Public Health is that of preventing disease and promoting positive health and self-care. Thus the study-unit introduces Health Promotion principles and methods with reference to underlying theories upon which such methods are based.
