DESCRIPTION In this study-unit student will care for a case load of four patients with varying levels of dependency under the supervision of a qualified nurse who will be appointed as the student's mentor.

The students will be expected to assess the four patients they have been assigned, identify their physical, psychological, social and educational needs/problems and plan nursing interventions to meet these needs.

They will also be expected to evaluate the outcome of their intervention. Students are expected to liaise with other members of the multi-disciplinary team as appropriate in delivering care and demonstrate good communication skills. They will be expected to demonstrate safe practice in relation to the aseptic technique, lifting and handling, infection control, drug administration and intravenous therapy. The students will also be expected to provide education to both clients and junior students.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims are for the students to learn to deliver holistic evidence-based nursing care to patients allocated to their care.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Show an understanding of:
    1. The client's underlying condition requiring care;
    2. Any medications the client is receiving, reason for administration and possible side effects;
    3. The nursing process;
    4. The nurses' code of practice.
- Verbalise the research evidence for providing specific care to the client under his/her care.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
1. Assess a patient's needs;
2. Prioritize care to be given to a group of patients;
3. Communicate effectively with other members of the health care team, clients and their families/friends;
4. Delegate care appropriately to other members of staff/junior students;
5. Provide education to clients and junior students;
6. Carry out all nursing skills/procedures with minimal supervision;
7. Demonstrate good time management skills;
8. Evaluate the effectiveness of care implemented and suitably adapt the plan of care in response to the outcomes of the evaluation;
9. Provide evidence based nursing care.
