DESCRIPTION The study-unit will seek to address the basic principles and theories of education with a focus on education in health and health-related settings, drawing on the contention that the role of the nurse characteristically comprises a significant element of teaching in any health care context. Different teaching and learning strategies will be addressed, in relation of the different client / patient groups which a nurse is expected to encouter.

The study-unit will provide the evidence for practice in relation to contexts of patient education and student supervision, with a specific focus on the teaching and learning methods associated with adult learning.

In the study unit the students will also explore clinical and patient education in the health care environment.

Study-unit Aims:

The aims of this study unit are to:
- Educate students regarding education theory, challenges and function;
- Equip the students with knowledge and skills enabling maximal use of IT in education;
- Develop students' responsibilities as teachers;
- Develop students' awareness of their responsibility for their own and others' professional development; and
- Enable students to develop specific skills associated with teaching effectively in the clinical setting.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Understand seminal and modern theories of education;
- Discuss main principles related to favourable learning environment in both the clinical and other settings; and
- Appreciate the use of IT in education.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Apply principles of education to facilitate optimal learning;
- Organise and manage the various elements and facets of teaching and learning in different environments;
- Organise a teaching approach and respective resources;
- Carry out effective teaching initiatives; and
- Use IT efficiently and effectively for education purposes.
