DESCRIPTION During this study-unit, a variety of therapies will be introduced and an integrative approach to common medical problems will be presented, hence highlighting the shift in health care toward integrating complementary therapies with Western medical treatments. It also addresses the importance of stress management techniques. Students will refer to the holistic health model, health promotion and disease prevention, and the scientific research underpinning this dynamic field. Students will get an opportunity to visit practical placements where they can observe therapists perform specific therapies on their clients after gaining consent from the respective clients.

They will also learn basic skills which can be within the nursing care of specific client groups as deemed appropriate. Experts in the various fields of complementary therapies will assist with the facilitation of this credit.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to introduce student to the field of complementary and alternative therapies.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

• Discuss the philosophical basis for complementary therapies;
• Discuss biomedical and holistic paradigms of health and healing;
• Discuss the role of complementary therapies in the management of health;
• Describe issues relating to the safety and efficacy of complementary therapies;
• Discuss the relationship between nursing and complementary therapies;
• Demonstrate an understanding of specific complementary therapies;
• Demonstrate a knowledge of research into the use of complementary therapies;
• Identify appropriate sources of information on complementary therapies.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

• Demonstrate a sound theoretical understanding of the subject matter so as to be equipped with supporting information on which to base the practical aspects of the complementary therapies the student will be exposed to.
