DESCRIPTION | A series of placements in various wards/units within the critical care setting supplemented by tutorials, demonstrations and clinical based discussions and opportunities for further reading and reflection. Study-unit Aims: The overall aim of this study-unit is to provide the opportunity to senior nursing students to observe and practice under supervision the care of critically ill patients in various wards/units. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - understand the basic principles related to the care of critically ill patients; - understand the set up of various units in the critical care sector and the role of the nurse within each setting; and - discuss the ethical and legal issues which guide critical care nursing practice. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - observe various clinical care nursing skills and practice some of them under supervision; - understand and interpret the monitoring procedures and investigations commonly used within critical care settings; and - communicate effectively with members of the multidisciplinary team, patients and their relatives.
