DESCRIPTION In this study-unit the students will be required to rotate across a number of clinical placements specialised in cardiac care. In doing so, the students will be exposed to patients with a number of cardiac conditions such as myocardial infarction, heart failure, care of arrhythmias.

These placements will give students the opportunity to consolidate the theory learnt during lectures and apply it to the actual delivery of cardiac services whilst working with qualified nurses in the field.

Under the guidance and supervision of the nurse working in the cardiac services the student will be able to understand how the cardiac patient is assessed, monitored and how the care of specific disorders is delivered.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit is aimed at helping students assess patients with a cardiac condition/ disease, plan and monitor patients with cardiac conditions,and deliver effective and comprehensive care to patients with the most common cardiac conditions.

This study-unit will help students to educate patients and their families, towards empowerment and compliance to treatment.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- know how to assess a patient presenting with a cardiac condition;
- know how to plan and deliver care appropriately to patients with the most common cardiac conditions;
- know the treatment / therapies/ interventions indicated for each different condition;
- know how to evaluate care in relation to cardiac patients and audit it accordingly.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- assess patients with cardiac conditions;
- assess cardiovascular risk and provide practical support to patients to modify risk;
- plan and deliver care appropriately to patients with common cardiac conditions;
- know the treatment and interventions indicated for each different condition;
- know how to evaluate care in relation to cardiac patients and audit it accordingly.
