TITLE Assessment, Assimilation and Implementation of Care

DESCRIPTION Students will be trained in the following areas:

- Interviewing and history taking;
- Assessment of the cardiovascular system including evaluation of the circulation, pulses (peripheral & central), blood pressure & organ perfusion, heart sounds & murmurs;
- Assessment of the respiratory system including effort and efficacy of breathing, breath sounds;
- Assessment of the abdomen including: identification of signs associated with intra-abdominal pathology, examination for organ enlargement, assessment of kidney function;
- Neurological assessment: examination of the twelve cranial nerves, examination of the motor & sensory systems, assessment of co-ordination; and
- Assessment of the major structures in the neck: examination of the thyroid gland, lymph nodes, salivary glands & cervical spine.
In addition the students will be guided towards developing competence in assimilating and implementing the knowledge and skills towards effective care delivery.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of the study-unit is toto teach the students the clinical skills required to assess a client's health status.

Students will:

- Gain understanding of the applied human anatomy and physiology;
- Perform a basic assessment of the health status of an adult;
- Learn how to identify and interpret common abnormalities;
- Liaise with appropriate members of the multi-disciplinary team; and
- Be able to assimilate and implement care accordingly drawing on the assessment skills developed.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Understand the importance of evaluating the client’s health status
- Know how to describe the function of the human physiological systems;
- Know how to identify abnormal physical signs;
- Know the causes of the abnormal findings;
- Understand the importance of which elements to consider when selecting and interpreting reports, parameters and results of the client in question.
- Understand the importance of planning and delivery of care which is required for the client in question.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to perform the following on an adult client:

- Carry out a thorough history;
- Perform a general assessment;
- Examine the cardio-respiratory system;
- Examine the abdomen;
- Examine the nervous system;
- Examine the neck;
- Identify common diseases affecting each system; and
- Map results of examinations and assessments so as to implement care in an effective and professional manner.
