TITLE Inter and Intra-personal Skills

LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

ECTS CREDITS 6

DEPARTMENT Nursing

DESCRIPTION Rationale:

These study-units aim to provide students with opportunities to develop and enhance their Inter/intra personal skills as part of their personal, professional and social development. The areas covered in these credits intend to equip students with such skills that facilitate a relationship between health professionals and clients and that between members of the health care team. The main rationale of these credits is that students learn the skills and not learn about them. Hence the method of learning is experiential and practice based, which is provided during the sessions.

In addition, these study-units intend to give students an opportunity to understand the processes which are generally experienced by most groups and teams. These study-units aim to provide the student nurses with a variety of skills necessary for effective and efficient group interaction and leadership. The nurse working in the community is in a position of leading groups of a different purpose. These include sharing groups, discussion groups, and learning groups amongst others. Hence the importance of gaining group skills helps the community nurse to facilitate and lead these groups in a way that the aim of the group is achieved.

The main focus of the skills covered during the sessions is communication, which is the basis of inter/intra personal skills. The focus is on:

a) the principles of human communication;
b) the important components and purposes of communication;
c) the use of communication.

These study-units also aim to cover other important skills that are used to enhance professional relationships. These include assertiveness, managing emotions, managing conflict and providing feedback. The use of self is also pivotal in human relationships. Thus the use of self-concept, self-awareness and self-esteem are also addressed in these study-units.

As for group dynamics the focus is on:

- Group dynamics and communication;
- Effective and ineffective groups;
- Teamwork;
