DESCRIPTION The study-unit covers the procedures and rationale for different types of surgeries, together with taking an overview of the role of interdisciplinary team members. Surgical procedures are discussed. The study-unit gives an in-depth analysis of the complications of surgery. The unit encourages students to focus and relate the complications to the pre-operative and post-operative principles of physiotherapy. A typical post-operative assessment is covered. Different types of surgical interventions are evaluated using the student's knowledge base to relate this to the overall general post-operative principles of treatment.

Study-unit Aims:

To prepare the students to assess and treat patients on the surgical wards.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to have an in-depth knowledge on different types of surgeries, their complications, patient assessment and relative treatment methods.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- empathise and relate to the psychological as well as the physical needs of the patient.
- assess holistically.
- formulate the aims of treatment.
- formulate a plan of treatment.
