TITLE Electrotherapy Practical

UM LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL Not Applicable

ECTS CREDITS 8

DEPARTMENT Physiotherapy

DESCRIPTION This study-unit will prepare students to determine the electrotherapeutic modality required to treat any pathological condition that can be treated by this intervention. It will prepare students to identify any contraindications and to apply any safety precautions necessary for the treatment to be effective, efficient and safe.

This study-unit will cover treatment by means of: low-frequency currents, TENS, Ultrasound, Interferential therapy, Ultraviolet and Laser therapy.

This study-unit includes a component on dermatological conditions that may respond to physiotherapy treatment intervention by means of Ultra violet irradiation.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to assist students to become competent in the use of electrotherapy apparatus. It also seeks to introduce students to the principles of management of patients suffering from certain dermatological conditions.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Identify the most appropriate electrotherapeutic modality to obtain maximum beneficial results;
- Use evidence based practice to support this treatment;
- Be familiar with the necessary precautions regarding each application;
- Recognise any contraindications that will inhibit the patient from using this treatment;
- Apply the therapeutic modality safely and efficiently;
- Comprehend the legal implications involved with this method of treatment;
- Describe the pathological changes which occur in dermatological conditions that can be treated by means of Ultra violet irradiation.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Carry out the required sensory testing in order to test whether a patient is contraindicated for treatment or not;
- Calculate a dose or intensity of treatment required pertinent to the application;
- Apply the apparatus effectively, efficiently and safely;
- Perform an assessment of a patient suffering from certain dermatological conditions and formulate an appropriate plan of treatment;
- Rationalise the physiotherapeutic intervention in patients suffering certain dermatological conditions;
- Be familiar with modalities of treatment utilised in dermatology; and
- Record the treatment given.
