DESCRIPTION This study-unit introduces the students to the basics of soft tissue manipulations. Students will be taught the physiological and therapeutic effects of soft tissue manipulation, as well as the contraindications, precautions and any relevant testing prior to applications.

The study-unit is mainly hands-on with the students practicing skills on each other after having had the underlying theory explained to them.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to allow the student to learn the different techniques of soft-tissue manipulations and apply them as required, as well as to determine if soft tissue manipulation therapy can be used as an adjunct intervention to influence the positive outcome of rehabilitation. The study-unit will also give students the competences as a means of intervention to promote health and prevention of disease.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- identify the indications and contraindications for the application of soft tissue manipulative techniques;
- apply knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology to the application of soft tissue technique procedures; and
- discuss and demonstrate the application of soft tissue manipulation techniques in a variety of health and well-being settings.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- carry out routine examinations to assess the suitability for soft tissue manipulations;
- perform soft tissue manipulation techniques; and
- discuss outcomes of soft tissue manipulative interventions.
