DESCRIPTION Clinical education forms the framework for enhancement of evidence-based practice. This study unit uses patient care as a basis for extending knowledge and competencies. It comprises a clinical placement of approximately 120 hours. Students are in patient contact under supervision.

Study-Unit Aims:

- Expand ability to communicate effectively with all members of the patient care team with a view to enhancing quality of physiotherapy treatment;
- Increase competence in patient assessment skills;
- Gain the competence of communicating patient's assessed condition;
- Have meaningful dialogue with the patient and carer; and
- Gain fundamental competence in basic life support.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Understand the role physiotherapy plays in individual patient care and within the overall provision of care;
- Use evidence to reason out and select effective objective tests;
- Understand the importance of accurate recording in clinical practice; and
- Demonstrate the importance of accurate recording in clinical practice.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Complete the subjective portion of an assessment of a patient with a mobility problem;
- Handle a patient safely and effectively;
- Communicate meaningfully with colleagues, the patient and the carer; and
- Deliver first aid to an unresponsive person in a variety of critical care scenarios.
