DESCRIPTION This study-unit has two main components covering topics related to Women's Health and Obstetrics and Gynaecology relevant to the physiotherapist. Study of the theoretical background is used as a foundation to build clinical reasoning skills using a problem based learning approach.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Understand the role of the physiotherapist in Women’s health.
- Demonstrate knowledge of: basic anatomy; physiology of hormonal control; diagnostic and monitoring procedures used in obstetrics; ante natal care; normal childbirth; postpartum complications and postnatal care.
- Demonstrate an understanding of global issues in women’s health.
- Show an appreciation of the influence of lifestyle factors on health and their relationship to physiotherapy (ie health education).
- Show an understanding of the mechanisms of continence and incontinence.
- Understand the role of physiotherapy in pelvic floor rehabilitation.
- Acquire a background knowledge of common pathologies of the female reproductive system and related surgical procedures.
- Show an understanding of social and psychological issues in women’s health and their impact on physiotherapy practice.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the pathology of osteoporosis.
- Differentiate between the stages of osteoporotic disease and relate this to the role of the physiotherapist.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to assess, plan and progress a treatment by:
- Applying knowledge of the physiological, physical and psychological changes that occur during pregnancy, labour and post partum that underpin practice.
- Applying knowledge of the pathology and clinical features of complications and other associated pathologies of pregnancy, childbirth and motherhood in the effective physiotherapy management of these conditions.
- Select treatment for pelvic rehabilitation appropriately based on subjective assessment.
- Plan and justify physiotherapy intervention in a patient following gynaecological surgery.
