| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit introduces the student to field of Amputee Rehabilitation. This area is significantly important in Malta as the number of persons undergoing lower limb amputations is not decreasing, despite the increase in the quality of medical care. It examines the contribution of physiotherapy and emphasizes evidence-based treatment and management strategies, based on exercise and linked with efficient use of the prosthesis. This study-unit consists of lectures, workshops and individual study. Study-unit Aims The aim of this study-unit is to equip the student with the knowledge and competencies needed to manage a person who has undergone a limb amputation using applied principles of exercise as a foundation for evidence-based practice. More focus is aimed at lower limb amputation due to ischaemic problems to reflect the significant prevalence of Diabetes as a causative factor. It is reported that 13% of the Maltese population suffer from Diabetes Mellitus. Learning Outcomes 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - understand the reasons behind the choice of surgical intervention for amputation; - understand the physical implications of limb loss; - understand the psychosocial implications of limb loss; - discuss the principles of exercise pertaining to exercise prescription for amputees; - be aware of the field of prosthetics and its relation to physiotherapy. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - identify physical problems based on assessment in a patient who has undergone an amputation; - plan the physiotherapy management of a person who has undergone an amputation according to the stage of rehabilitation.
