Study-Unit Description

CODE PHT3025

TITLE Cardiac Rehabilitation

UM LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL Not Applicable

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Physiotherapy

DESCRIPTION This study-unit will consist of a mix of lectures, practical skills sessions and a workshop and independent study. It will introduce the student to the fields of respiratory physiotherapy and pulmonary rehabilitation. Both are becoming increasingly important in modern health care systems. Theory sessions will be linked to clinical case studies. International treatment guidelines will be accessed as an introduction to evidence-based physiotherapy.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit is designed to provide the student with an opportunity to understand and experience the aetiology and pathophysiology of the cardiovascular system.

It aims to give the student the necessary competencies to manage a patient recovering from a cardiac episode or living with cardiovascular disease, and to manage the prevention of cardiac problems as a public health issue. When coupled with clinical practice in the fourth year of the course, the competency in autonomous physiotherapy treatment of people with breathing problems would be enhanced in most supported environments.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Comprehend the patho-mechanics of physical problems caused by cardiovascular health issues;
- Apply knowledge of various key respiratory pathologies to the choice of physiotherapy techniques;
- Identify the clinical factors that lead to physical impairment and disability in disorders that include Atherosclerosis, Hypertension, Buerger's, aortic aneurysm, Raynauds varicosities and thrombi, rheumatic and ischaemic heart disease, myocardial infarction;
- Demonstrate an understanding of the overall process of cardiac and thoracic surgery and its implications to safe physiotherapy treatment;
- Comprehend the physiology of exercise;
- Be aware of the benefits of exercise training;
- Analyse the 4 phases of cardiac rehabilitation for their potential benefit, risk and timeliness;
- Comprehend the psychosocial implications of cardiac episodes;
- Criticise the evidence base of physiotherapy in cardiac rehabilitation.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Discuss the overall management of a patient with cardiovascular disease;
- Assess the patient with a view to select and apply safe evidence-based physiotherapy techniques indicated to a patient with cardiovascular disease;
- Assess the patient with a view to select and apply safe evidence-based physiotherapy techniques indicated to a patient following surgical procedures for cardiac disease;
- Construct the necessary tools to work within an interdisciplinary team environment, coming into effect during the clinical placements of the programme.
