DESCRIPTION Content covered:

- Introduction to the basic concepts of mental health.
- The aetiology of mental illness.
- Classification of mental disorders and their aetiology, description and treatment.
- The role of the various mental health care professionals.
- Medication and other psychiatric treatments used in treating mental disorders.
- Basic psychological and behavioral techniques in treating mental illness.
- Mental institutional care versus community care.
- The role of the physiotherapist in mental health.
- Anxiety and its management.
- Depression and physical exercise.
- Stress and its management.
- Relaxation training.

Study-unit Aims:

- To instill an awareness of how common mental illness and morbidity is.
- To attain a basic understanding of the characteristics of mental illness.
- To understand the role and importance of other mental health care professionals and the importance of the mental health care team.
- To understand the role of the physiotherapist in mental health care.
- To understand how stress and disease are interrelated.
- To understand how the physiotherapist can help in stress management.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Recognise the signs and symptoms presented in patients with mental disorders and what various treatment interventions are available in order to treat such signs and symptoms.

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills):
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Use core physiotherapeutic skills in a more sensitive and understanding way when treating a physical condition in a mentally ill person; apply relaxation techniques in stressful/anxious patients.
