Induction Course Programme for Newly Recruited Support Staff
The Human Resources Office organised a five-day induction course programme between 31st October and 7th November 2007. The programme was aimed at newly recruited support staff who was recently employed at the University of Malta, working in administration, faculties, centres and the library. It gave the participants a basic understanding of the organisational structure and the several services offered by the University of Malta. During the programme, participants were provided with guidelines and tips on how to tackle their day-to-day tasks more effectively.
On the first day of the programme,
Dr Mary Anne Lauri, who is the Pro-Rector responsible for students and institutional affairs, gave a brief introduction of the University of Malta. The participants were then addressed by
Mr Anthony Gellel, the University Registrar, who gave a brief explanation of the many functions of the
Office of the Registrar. Mr Gellel was assisted by the
Ms Veronica Grech, Deputy Registrar, and
Ms Stephanie Cassar, who discussed the use of the University’s Student Information Management System (SIMS).
Ms Stefania Fabri, Deputy Director of the
International & EU Office, delivered a talk on the role of the same office, followed by a brief talk by
Ms Anita Aloisio, Acting Director of Finance, regarding the role of the
Finance Office.
The second day involved
Ms May Bezzina, who introduced the set-up of the Faculties, Centres and Institutes and gave an overview of the work involved from admission of students up to the graduation period. This was followed by an introductory presentation of the Scheduling Office by
Mr Luigi Pellegrini, and a talk on the Registry Office’s responsibilities by
Ms Marlene Bezzina. A presentation on guidelines and tips on meetings and minute taking was delivered by
Ms Jo-Anne Attard.
On the third day of the programme a presentation on the services offered by the
IT Services (ITS) was delivered by
Ms Vanessa Camilleri and the Director
Mr Robert Sultana. A presentation on the function of the
Communications and Alumni Relations Office by
Ms Patricia Camilleri, Director of the same office, followed. Campus tours were held by
Ms Angela Xuereb and
Ms Anna Catania. These tours helped the participants to orientate themselves with the locations of the faculties, institutes, centres and other sections of the University. The third day finished off with a presentation on the use of the University’s website, held by Ms Angela Xuereb at one of the ITS Laboratories.
The fourth day involved
Ms Joanna Felice, Head of Reader Services, who introduced the services of the
Library, followed by a presentation and tours conducted by
Ms Josianne Vella and
Ms Mona Azzopardi. During the last day of the programme, presentations were held by
Fr John Vella from the
Counselling Services, Mr David Herrera of the ‘
Kunsill Studenti Universitarji’ (KSU) and
Mr Albert Debono of the
Student Advisory Services, assisted by
Mr Noel Caruana. At the end of the programme, the new Director of Human Resources,
Ms Jacqueline Fenech, was introduced to the participants by
Karen Cacciattolo.
During each session, the new recruits were encouraged to actively participate in the discussion. They were also given the opportunity to provide their general feedback on the course by means of an evaluation form, distributed to them on the last session of the course. Participants who attended to at least four days of the programme were provided with a certificate of attendance.
