2. Composition of the Visiting Teaching Stream
The Visiting Teaching Stream is composed of five posts:
i. Visiting Professor
ii. Visiting Associate Professor
Note: The posts of Visiting Professor and Visiting Associate Professor shall only be open to persons who have previously obtained the status of Professor or Associate Professor at the University of Malta, or who have obtained a comparable academic profile at another University of repute.
iii. Visiting Senior Lecturer

3. Eligibility for Appointment in the Visiting Teaching Stream
Appointment at the level of Visiting Assistant Lecturer will normally require a person to have a post-graduate qualification and at least five (5) years professional experience in a position of responsibility related to the subject matter they are engaged to teach.
Appointment at the level of Visiting Lecturer will normally require a person to have either:
i. a post-graduate qualification and at least ten (10) years professional experience in a position of position of responsibility related to the subject matter they are engaged to teach; or
ii. a Ph.D. degree
Appointment at the level of Visiting Senior Lecturer will normally require a person to have either:
i. a post-graduate qualification and at least fifteen (15) years professional experience; or
ii. a Ph.D. degree and at least five (5) years professional experience.
The professional experience must in either case be in a position of responsibility related to the subject matter they are engaged to teach.

4. Nature of the Appointment
Visiting Teaching staff are appointed by the University Council on a definite contract basis for a period of one year, with the possibility of renewal. In the case of renewal the number of contact hours may be revised depending on the evolving needs of the University.
Appointments are made to teach a minimum of 28 hours in an academic year (T1) up to a maximum of 252 hours (T9).
The number of hours reflects the timetabled duties relating to lectures. However the appointment incorporates preparatory work and other related duties such as the setting and marking of assignments and examinations, and the submission of results in accordance with the formal deadlines established by the University of Malta.
The lecturing times of the University of Malta are Monday to Friday between 08.00 and 20.00 hours. Visiting teaching staff are required to lecture at any time on day programmes within the established lecturing times in accordance with official timetables.
The annual rate of payment for Visiting Teaching staff at T1 level is provided as follows:

The rates for Tn will be multiples of the T1 shown above.
Payments are made every four weeks through the payroll.

5. How to make an application
Applicants are required to submit the following information
i. A covering letter clearly indicating the study units they wish to lecture and the level of grade they consider applicable to their circumstances
ii. Four copies of an up to date Curriculum Vitae
iii. One copy of any certification relevant to the application

The envelope or subject box in the case of an email must be marked ‘Visiting Teaching Application’ together with the name of the relevant Departments, Institutes or Centres being applied for.

6. Selection Process
Applications will be assessed by a Selection Board according to the eligibility criteria.
Successful applicants will be contacted by the Head of the Department, Institute or Centre with details of the requirements. Unsuccessful applicants will be advised in writing.
The Office for Human Resource Management and Development will issue a letter of appointment following Council approval. This will need to be countersigned by the Visiting staff member as confirmation of the appointment.
