DESCRIPTION Introduction to Robotics will introduce students through an overview of robotics, using both research and practical approach that will include robot mechanisms, dynamics and intelligent controls. Through this study-unit, students will learn the core techniques for representing robots that perform physical tasks in the real world, such as grasping.

Topics include:

- History, state-of-the-art types, applications and legislation;
- Robot design;
- 3D graphics and simulations in design and planning;
- Movement, Motion planning and kinematics;
- Control design and sensors;
- Human-machine interfaces;
- Human-machine interaction;
- Programming and building Arduino robots and devices;
- The future of Robotics.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to give the students foundational knowledge in Robotics and AI, using both theory and practical hands-on sessions. Students will gain both a basic theoretical understanding in the field, as well as hands-on knowledge to building and programming robots and devices.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify and describe the different types of robots;
- Dentify real world examples of how robots have collaborated in disaster. situations and how they have helped the improvement of human health care;
- Describe the state-of-the-art in robotics;
- List key points in designing, creating and interacting with robots;
- Outline various future robotic capabilities.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Create compelling designs and 3D animations and simulations of robots and their functions;
- Create and program robots to perform a variety of movements, such as grasping objects;
- Solve a problem using more than one strategy.
