DESCRIPTION The study-unit intends to explore emerging technologies and techniques within the IT field. The state of the art in various research areas will be assessed, including cloud computing, distributed computing, data and information processing, web oriented computing, mobile and smart devices, programming techniques, bioinformatics, HCI, and others. Course content may vary depending on current trends in IT. Academic Journals will be used to support learning.

Study-unit Aims:

- To give the students the opportunity to explore newly emerging and cutting edge technologies;
- To explore the state of the art in various areas through a theoretical and practical approach;
- To make students able to identify relevant techniques for use in current and future projects. following academic research;
- To further develop student presentation skills.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify important characteristics of emerging technologies together with their applicability to different areas in software development;
- Identify various industries affected by new developments in IT.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Analyse key literature in the area;
- Write a concise scientific exposé of the area;
- Demonstrate critical awareness of the key issues of the area;- Use the literature and their understanding of the area to give a seminar;
- Plan and deliver a seminar about the area;
- Demonstrate an ability to explain key concepts delivered during the seminar to the general public.
