Study-Unit Description

CODE CPS5117

TITLE Dissertation

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 30

DEPARTMENT Computer Science

DESCRIPTION The dissertation study-unit provides space for students to research a topic in computer science. Students get to look into a research or engineering problem for which a research plan and solution is typically already sketched out in the proposal. The students’ role is to research related work, implement a solution and evaluate it – with the research findings being presented in a dissertation and oral presentation, and defended during an oral examination.

Students are provided with a research problem and a strong indication of the possible solution. The student's main work would then involve designing, implementing, testing and evaluating the proposed solution.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of the dissertation is to provide students with the opportunity to understand better a topic of computer science by conducting research in it. Students are thereby also exposed to the scientific research process, acting upon a proposed research idea and solution and executing it through its implementation and evaluation, finally culminating in the presentation and defense of the resulting research findings.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Critically analyze literature;
- Engineer proposed conceptual solutions to research and engineering problems;
- Execute experimental solution ideas through software implementation/ experimentation/mathematical proofs;
- Analyze research findings in order to draw conclusions;
- Present research findings through scientific writing and oral presentations with due precision and scientific rigour in relation to the dissertation topic.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Engineer non-trivial solutions to complex research problems;
- Conduct scientific research under supervision;
- Provide the technical know-how as part of academic/industrial research projects or commercial initiatives related to the dissertation topic.

Main Text/s and any supplementary readings:

As advised by the dissertation supervisor.
