| DESCRIPTION | Web Science (WS) is a new interdisciplinary field created to understand, engineer and exploit the largest information construct created by men, the Internet. This introductory course is divided into three main parts. • The first part will explore the differences between the World Wide Web (WWW), Web 2.0 and Web X.0 (the Semantic Web). The topics covered will include Knowledge Management, the knowledge life cycle and various Semantic Web applications in order to taste the future of the Web. • The second part will deal with the building blocks of the Semantic Web, namely the eXtensible Markup Language (XML). The topics covered will also include other XML related technologies (such as DTDs, XML Schemas, XPath, XQuery, XSLT, FOP, XLink and XForm). • The third part of the course will provide an introduction to Web and related Technologies. At the end of the study-unit students should have a good understanding of the Web and related technologies and they should be well equipped to engineer the next generation of the Web.
