DEPARTMENT Faculty of Information and Communication Technology

DESCRIPTION This study-unit has two aims: (a) To give the student a sense of perspective regarding currently accepted concepts of ICTS, and (b) To develop the student’s ability to research and report in these fields. This study-unit will be delivered by a number of Study Unit Coordinators from different departments covering various areas within the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology. The other part of the study-unit will concentrate on developing the student’s understanding of the methods and practices used for carrying out scientific investigations, writing up and disseminating results.

The 7 hours tutorials will be delivered in the form of seminars covering "Writing, Citation, and Referencing styles to Avoid Accidental Plagiarism". These will include: The purpose of research; What plagiarism is; How to avoid plagiarism; How to use the literature to find relevant literature; How to read efficiently; How to quote/cite/reference properly; and, Tips for giving an effective presentation.

The study-unit will be assessed by an expository assignment. Students will have to write a report choosing ONE out of the possible topics being offered. The report should be no longer than 6,000 words (approximately around 12 pages with font being Times New Roman and 12 of size).

The attention of students is explicitly drawn to regulation 40 of the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2009. Students are to attend ALL lectures in this study-unit with no exception unless accompanied by a valid medical certificate otherwise the conditions dictated by Reg. 40, will be enforced.

It is recommended to students that should their programme of studies permit, they take LIN1063 (Academic Reading and Writing in English), offered by the Institute of Linguistics, as an Optional study-unit.
