Study-Unit Description

CODE ICT3903

TITLE Final Year Project in Computer Engineering

UM LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 6

ECTS CREDITS 18

DEPARTMENT Faculty of Information and Communication Technology

DESCRIPTION The final-year project is the largest single piece of work assigned to students throughout their degree. Its main aim is that of exposing the student to the scientific process in Computing, from the formulation of a hypothesis and the description of existing work on the subject, to the design and implementation of a solution, to the evaluation of this solution towards addressing the original hypothesis.

Study-unit Aims

This study-unit aims at giving the student a better understanding of the scientific process in the field of Computer Engineering. It exposes the student to the skills necessary for constructing a logical argument when attempting to answer a particular question in the field of computing. It is intended both to consolidate the skills gained throughout the degree programme as well as prepare students to undertake and participate in projects upon graduation.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Learn how to construct a comprehensive literature review;
- Demonstrate an understanding of a particular problem, putting it in a particular context of study, articulate the criteria that describe the adequacy of a solution, design and develop a solution and finally, asses the solution with respect to the identified criteria;
- write a well structured report describing the techniques used and the results obtained.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Manage the time allocated to perform a task;
- Reading of technical and advanced material;
- Structuring one's thought in a logical manner;
- Defend the work done in the dissertation.
