Study-Unit Description

Study-Unit Description

CODE MNE1701

TITLE Foundations in Operational Amplifiers Circuits

UM LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Microelectronics and Nanoelectronics

DESCRIPTION The study-will cover op amp fundamentals and circuitry including: the Op-amp concept and its implementation, design, construction and manufacture. The students will first learn how to analyse simple circuits using an op-amp model. The students will also be able to analyse and design basic negative feedback op-amp circuits such as Voltage follower, Inverting, Noninverting Amps, Adder, and the Subtractor circuit. A model for evaluating a Non ideal Operational Amplifiers circuit is presented and adopted for the analyses of simple circuits.

Finally, non-linear op-amp circuits such as the Comparator, Integrator, Differentiator, Log, Antilog, Super-Rectifier, Peak Detector, Instrumentation Amplifier,Multivibrators: the 555 Timer IC are presented.

Study-unit Aims

This unit aims to introduce an important electronic building block used for implementing computer interfacing and communications circuitry - the Operational Amplifier (opamp). The students will appreciate the behaviour of the op-amp and be able to use it in simple feedback circuits. Students will be able to analyse and design simple circuits implemented with op-amps.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

• Describe the internal principle of operation of the opamps;
• Describe the properties of an ideal and non-ideal typical opamp;
• Analyse and design oscillator and multivibrator circuits, Integrators, Differentiators, Adders, Subtractors, Log, Antilog etc.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to build and test various operational amplifier circuits.
