Study-Unit Description

CODE MNE3205

TITLE VLSI Design for Embedded Systems

UM LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL Not Applicable

ECTS CREDITS 6

DEPARTMENT Microelectronics and Nanoelectronics

DESCRIPTION The study-unit covers the processing stages and building blocks in a VLSI embedded system: sensing methods: analogue and digital approach; signal conditioning amplifiers and filters; ADC/DAC for embedded design:sigma-delta converters.

The study-unit covers also processor design and optimised hardware concepts and architectures such pipelining, systolic arrays and other parallel topologies; design using VHDL/System C; implementation of embedded communications protocols: serial, parallel, I2C, SPI buses, networking protocols.

The study-unit also looks at issues related to memory design, data handling, error-handling, error-detection and correction.

Study-unit Aims

The study-unit aims to impart students knowledge on how embedded systems can be implemented within an ASIC. The study unit aims also to train students to compare processor designs and different communications protocols used to transfer data between units.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
