DESCRIPTION The study-unit covers the concepts of Resonance and Sinusoidal oscillation - Review of Resonance and resonant tanks using RLC passive components, Q-Factor, Bandwidth, Piezoelectric crystals and Sinusoidal oscillators, Feedback and stability using control theory, The Barkhaussen criterion, Phase/Gain Margin for sustained Oscillation, Achieving exact marginal stability, Use of negative resistance. Different topologies of Oscillators: Colpitts, Hartley, Phase-Shift, Bubba, Wien-Bridge, Quadrature, Crystal. Oscillator design and performance comparison.

The study-unit also covers Active filters including Advantages/disadvantages over passive filters, Filter Specifications, Linear v.s. Nonlinear filters, Group Delay, Phase Delay, Types, Sallen-Key Circuit. High Pass, Low Pass, Band Pass, Band Reject, Active Twin, Active Wien-Robinson, Chebychev, Butterworth, Bessel Filters.


Study-unit Aims

This unit introduces the concept of oscillators in microelectronic circuits and the design of filter circuits which are used in telecommunications and signal conditioning.


Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe and mathematically model the principle of resonance
- Explain the operation of various oscillator and filter circuits.
- Design oscillator and filter circuits.

2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Build and test a basic active filter circuit.
