Students reading for the Master in Integrated Resource Management (MIRM) at the University of Malta last year participated in a research mission organized in the Parco Regionale della Maremma (Italy), within the ambit of the EU-funded WADI research project. Through extensive hands-on fieldwork and discussion seminars during their week-long visit (12th to 20th July 2008), the students addressed a range of environmental management concerns, including the identification and use of sustainability indicators, assessment of population dynamics of the endemic Limonium etruscum, evaluation of coastal dune-field dynamics, and assessment of likely impacts of climate change on this Tuscan protected area. Students also conducted research on aspects of landscape ecology and corridor connectivity, tourism sustainability and visitor management. Research conclusions were synthesized within the framework of the WADI project, which come to an end in December 2008.
