| COURSE OVERVIEW |
The Diploma course is a one-year day course. The students are considered as regular University students. During the first semester, all students follow all study units and an optional study unit. During the second semester, students may follow one stream of specialization, animal science, crop science or herb science. Those students who choose the animal science stream, have to follow a crop production study unit in the first semester, while students who choose the crop or herb science streams, have to follow an animal production study unit in the first semester. In the second semester, alongside the specialisation streams, students follow a study unit on food systems and have to prepare a report on a topic, chosen and agreed upon earlier during the year. |

| LEARNING OUTCOMES |
The students gain knowledge and experience on rural sciences and food systems. They will be able to tackle agricultural problems and perceive agriculture as part of a rural, environmental and urban ecosystem. |

| CAREER OPPORTUNITIES AND ACCESS TO FURTHER STUDY |
Diploma graduates may be employed as laboratory or agricultural officers with Government, industry or co-operatives. Some students may further their studies by following the Bachelor’s degree offered by the Institute, and other Bachelor’s degrees offered by University and other foreign universities. Depending on the circumstances, some students, follow a veterinary course at a foreign university. |

| COURSE INTENDED FOR |
The Diploma course is open to those students who complete with success the Preparatory Course or to direct-entry students who possess normal University entry qualifications and advanced levels in Chemistry and Biology. |

| ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS |
Applicants must satisfy the General Entry Requirements for admission, namely, the Matriculation Certificate and Secondary Education Certificate passes at Grade 5 or better in Maltese, English Language and Mathematics.
Applicants must also satisfy the following Special Course Requirements:
Passes at Advanced Matriculation Level in Biology and Chemistry.
The admission requirements are applicable for courses commencing in October
2011.
