DESCRIPTION The study-unit is based on defining a project within a field of energy, sustainable energy, renewable sources of energy or related topics, preparing a proposal, setting an appropriate methodology, targets and deliverables and implementing the whole project within the time frame of 1 semester. Each student will be assigned to a supervisor from the Institute's Members of Academic Staff, who would provide guidance on initial reading and data sources, comment on draft reports, and provide support and feedback at all stages of the work. A co-supervisor may also be appointed from within the Institute or another department or faculty at the University of Malta, as may be required.

Study-unit Aims:

• To enable the student to formulate, plan and execute a particular energy project;
• To apply theoretical knowledge and acquire experience in using empirical analysis tools to solve a hands-on problem in energy technology;
• To enhance the capacity of independent research and provide an opportunity to build on personal skills in addressing an energy issue;
• To deliver results, as would be required in real-life working environments.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Put into practice the theoretical knowledge that was acquired throughout the Masters course;
- Learn to carry out independent research in a structured and well-planned manner;
- Where possible, learn from industrial collaborations about new techniques for solving a critical issue.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Develop effective methodologies to carry out literature review;
- Build up on existing material to solve a specific problem;
- Experiment and enhance the effectiveness of a proposed solution;
- Express one's findings and defend them in written format and oral deliberations.

Books, Scientific Publications, software and other academic or technical aides and tools, relevant to the topic of research.

 
ADDITIONAL NOTES Pre-requisite qualification: Proven Proficiency in English Language.

Co-Requisite Study-unit: ISE4008

**September Assessment Session: Students who fail to obtain an overall pass mark will be re-examined in the Dissertation. However, the resit availability for the Oral Examination is at the discretion of the Board of Examiners.
