Teaching Faculty

Dr. Jacqueline Azzopardi received her Ph.D. from the University of Leicester, UK.  She is the Director of the Institute of Criminology at the University of Malta and coordinates the collaborative M.A. degree program in Criminology, Law, and Public Policy with Western Michigan University. She coordinates courses, tutors and lectures in classics and theories of criminology/criminal justice studies, policing, victimology, transnational crimes, hate crimes, gender and crime, domestic violence and sex-related crimes.  She will be teaching Victimology and Criminal Justice Process.  jacqueline.azzopardi@um.edu.mt

 

Dr. Gregory J. Howard is Associate Professor of Sociology at Western Michigan University where he directs the graduate program and coordinates the collaborative M.A. degree program in Criminology, Law, and Public Policy with the University of Malta.  He earned a Ph.D. from the School of Criminal Justice at the State University of New York at Albany.  He will be teaching a Mediterranean case study module on surveillance and security.  This module builds on his current research into mobility, surveillance technology, and border control, with a particular interest in the work of FRONTEX and Operation Nautilus in the central Mediterranean.  gregory.howard@wmich.edu

 

Dr. Susan Caringella is a Professor of Sociology at Western Michigan University and received her PhD from Western Michigan University in Sociology. She will be team teaching the module on gender, justice and crime, focusing on crimes by and against girls and women. She has numerous publications on violence against women, rape and sexual violence and critical theory/criminology.  susan.caringella@wmich.edu

 

Dr. Frances Camilleri-Cassar is a full time Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Criminology at the University of Malta.  She will be teaching modules on research methods as well as gender and justice.  Her research interests include studies on social policy, particularly on women and politics, and date rape.  frances.camilleri-cassar@um.edu.mt

 

Dr, Paul Ciccantell is a Professor of Sociology at Westerrn Michigan University.  He received his Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.  He will be teaching a Mediterranean case study module on environmental crime and justice.  His research and teaching interests bring together comparative sociology, the sociology of development, environmental sociology, and organization sociology.  The overarching research goal is to develop a theoretical model and a methodology that can provide insight into issues of sustainable development, the impacts of globalization and restructuring on firm and state strategies and operastions, and the creation and reproduction of global socioeconomic inequality.  paul.ciccantell@wmich.edu

 

Dr. Kevin Corder is a Professor of Political Science at Western Michigan University.  He received his Ph.D. from Washington University in Saint Louis.  He will teach a module on quantitative methods, covering basic econometrics and statistical analysis.  The module will focus on quantitative techniques used to evaluate the impact and effectiveness of crime reduction strategies.  His research interests included U.S. electoral politics and public policy, particularly government intervention in and regulation of capital markets.  j.kevin.corder@wmich.edu

 

Dr. Sushi Datta-Sandhu is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Western Michigan University.  She received her Ph.D. at the University of Nairobi.  She will be team teaching the module on gender, justice and crime.  Her research areas are African political systems, gender and development, and gender and justice.  s.datta-sandhu@wmich.edu

 

Dr. Saviour Formosa is a Senior Lecturer with the Institute of Criminology at the University of Malta.  He received his Ph.D. from the University of Huddersfield.  His research focuses on spatial information systems and covers criminal statistics, spatio-temporal analysis and socio-technic analysis across the social, physical and land use disciplines. He has developed the www.crimemalta.com website which covers ongoing news and crime-related statistics in Malta.  He will be teaching research methods and spatial analysis in the program.  saviour.formosa@mepa.org.mt

 

Dr. Barry Goetz is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Western Michigan University.  He received his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of California at Berkeley. He will be teaching the module on state and corporate crime, especially as these have to do with enforcement and the resulting inequities in societies. His current research examines the role of law enforcement organizations in promoting social equity and outreach, especially as these relate to community policing and fire control policies.  barry.goetz@wmich.edu

 

Dr. Chien-Juh Gu is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Western Michigan University.  She received her Ph.D. in sociology from Michigan State University and will be teaching the qualitative methods and analysis module.  Her research areas include gender, social psychology, social inequality, and international migration. Her research focuses on minority mental health, with primary interests in gender comparison and Asian Americans.  chien-juh.gu@wmich.edu

 

 Dr. Mark S. Hurwitz is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Western Michigan University.  He received his Ph.D. from Michigan State University and his law degree (JD) from Brooklyn Law School. He will be teaching Comparative Legal Systems in the Program. He focuses his research on judicial politics, judicial behavior, law and courts, and legislative politics.  mark.hurwitz@wmich.edu

 

Dr. Susan Hoffman is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Western Michigan University and Director of the Institute of Government and Politics.  She earned a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Wisconsin at Madison and served as a practicing city planner after receiving a master’s degree in urban planning from the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee.  She will teach a module on studying public policy. She studies and teaches the policy process, public administration and urban politics with a book to her credit called Politics and Banking: Ideas, Public Policy and the Creation of Financial Institutions (Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press, 2001).  susan.hoffmann@wmich.edu

 

Dr. Ron Kramer is a Professor of Sociology and Director of the Criminal Justice Program at Western Michigan University.  He received his Ph.D. from Ohio State University.  His research specialty is state and corporate crime and he will be teaching a module on this topic in the program. He is the co-author of Crimes of the American Nuclear State; State-Corporate Crime: Wrongdoing at the Intersection of Business and Government; and of State Crime in the Global Age.  ronald.kramer@wmich.edu

 

Dr. Ashlyn Kuersten is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Western Michigan University.  She received her Ph.D. from University of South Carolina.  She will be teaching Comparative Legal Systems in the Program.  Her research focuses on the U.S. Courts of Appeals and gender and the law. ashlyn.kuersten@wmich.edu

 

Dr. Angela M. Moe is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Western Michigan University.  She has a Ph.D. in Justice Studies, Law and the Social Sciences from Arizona State University. Dr. Sandra Scicluna received her Ph.D. from the University of Leicester, UK, and is a lecturer with the Institute of Criminology at the University of Malta. She will be lecturing on corrections and criminal justice. Her research interests lie in community corrections and prisons, substance abuse and domestic violence.  sandra.scicluna@um.edu.mt

 

Dr. Zoann Snyder is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Western Michigan University.  She holds a Ph.D. in Justice Studies, Law and the Social Sciences from Arizona State University.  She will teach a Mediterranean case study module on gender, crime, and justice.  Her research covers a wide variety of issues, including self-determination and local control in American Indian education, American Indian justice, attitudes toward AIDs policies, and incarcerated woman and their children zoann.snyder@wmich.edu

 

Mr. Andrew Willis is visiting Professor at the Institute of Criminology, University of Malta. Formerly he was a Senior Lecturer in Criminology and Head of Department at the Department of Criminology, University of Leicester, UK. He has extensive international experience of Masters-level course design and delivery in criminology, crime prevention and community safety, police leadership and management, and security and risk management with research interests in all these areas.  aw.theoldparsonage@btinternet.com
