Master of Science in Sustainable Environmental Resources Management (MSc SERM)
The Master of Science in Sustainable Environmental Resources Management/Master of Science in Integrated Science and Technology programme is an innovative dual degree programme established jointly by the University of Malta and James Madison University (Virginia, USA). The sustainable management of environmental resources today presents a major challenge for human societies worldwide. There is growing recognition that sustainability cannot be achieved in a piecemeal fashion but requires the balanced integration of different perspectives. The objectives of the Master of Science in Sustainable Environmental Resources Management programme are thus to enable students to gain and apply technical knowledge to address complex natural and/or anthropogenic problems that impact the environmental condition through a holistic systems approach.
This interdisciplinary course draws on such insights and aims to train graduates to apply scientific and technical knowledge to holistically address complex and multi-faceted environmental issues. The international perspective of the course enhances students’ ability to appreciate the global nature of environmental resource management challenges, and the necessity of developing collaborative solutions across geographical, political and economic divides.
The Master of Science in Sustainable Environmental Resources Management programme’s approach enables students to develop a range of transferable skills, by:
- Analyzing and solving real-world problems;
- Exploring the influence of policy on science and technology (& vice versa);
- Integrating social, political, legal and cultural aspects into technology solutions, within a broad systems approach;
- Developing a technical skill set that includes both basic and advanced concepts of data measurement and mining, use of Geographical Information Systems, and modelling and simulation of complex systems;
