TITLE Renewable Energy Resources

DESCRIPTION This Study-unit will introduce the various renewable energy sources of energy.

The physics of solar radiation and the global distribution of the solar energy resource will be presented. In addition, the topic will also deal the mathematical modelling and measurement techniques used to quantify the solar energy resource at a given site.

The fundamental principles governing the formation and behaviour of wind will be introduced. Reference will be made to existing publications and studies describing how the wind resources are distributed globally. Measurement and modelling techniques used to assess quantitatively the wind resources at a particular location will also be presented.

The study unit will also cover energy from sea waves and currents, geothermal energy and energy from biomass and waste, including bio-fuels and marine algae.

Study-unit Aims

The main scope of this unit is to introduce the various renewable energy sources of energy, especially those that offer a potential resource for Malta.

It is important to note the fact that this module will focus on the renewable energy resources and their potential only. This module will lay down the basics, prior to moving to the next modules which will cover renewable energy technologies for converting these energy sources into a usable form of energy.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- apply the fundamental principles in physics [and chemistry/biology] of the various resources of renewable energy
- evaluate the various advantages and limitations of the various resources
- apply the different methodologies used to evaluate the potential of the various resources through the application of mathematical models, measurement techniques and software tools
- interpret statistical data characterising the renewable energy potential at a given site

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills): By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- assess the potential of the different renewable energy sources through the application of scientific principles, measurement techniques and software tools
- prepare reports quantifying the renewable energy resources available for a given site
- recommend the most viable sources of renewable energy at a given region
