Introduction
IT Services manages a number of wireless hotspots in designated areas on campus. The service enables University of Malta (UoM) staff, students and visitors to connect to the campus network using laptops and other devices that support wireless connections.
The wireless network service provides UoM staff and students access to:
- online information available on the University intranet, including the Library e-journals, eSIMS, VLE and Internet.
- email.
- IT Services printing facilities.
Connecting to the Wireless Network
The University of Malta provides two wireless services:
- The browser-based service is available to all staff and students who have a UoM IT account. It is also available to visitors with a guest UoM IT account. Once connected to the wireless access point, users can start using the service by first launching a web browser and authenticating using their username and password.
If you have a laptop running Microsoft Windows XP/Vista/7 follow this instruction guide [PDF] to connect to the wireless network.
- eduroam, an international initiative, for University staff, students and visitors coming from academic institutions participating in this initiative. To use eduroam, you will need to explicitly configure your laptop or other mobile device. If you are a visitor at the University of Malta, you need to do this before you arrive in Malta. UoM staff and students can also connect to the UoM wireless network via eduroam.
More information about eduroam and instructions to configure your device are available here.
Wireless Locations
The wireless network service is available at these locations. IT Services is gradually deploying wireless network access across the entire campus. Departments are invited to propose locations within their respective buildings that could be equipped with wireless access points. Requests should be made through the Head of Department here.
Wireless Printing
All printers managed by IT Services can be used for wireless printing from laptops running MS Windows. Printing over the wireless network involves the installation of the appropriate printer drivers on the laptop. Follow this instruction guide [PDF] to install the printer drivers on a laptop running Windows Vista/7. Users will need to purchase printing credits online to be able to print over the wireless network.
Security Risks
The convenience associated with wireless hotspots also brings security risks. Users are therefore advised to use secure services/sites especially when transmitting personal data such as passwords, credit card numbers etc.
Secure services/sites include:
| IMAP Settings* SMTP (outgoing mail server) server: mail.um.edu.mt port: 587 authentication required START TLS enabled
IMAP (incoming mail server) server: mailstore.um.edu.mt port: 993 SSL enabled | POP Settings* SMTP (outgoing mail server) server: mail.um.edu.mt port: 587 authentication required START TLS enabled
POP3S (incoming mail server) server: mailstore.um.edu.mt port: 995 SSL enabled |
Apart from transmitting personal data through secure sites, users are strongly encouraged to maintain the security of their computer/s to the highest level possible.
