1. What is Google Apps for Education?

Google Apps for Education is a suite of web-based messaging and collaboration applications that include Google Mail (Gmail), Google Calendar, Google Drive, and more. Google Apps provides you with unlimited online storage for your email and any documents that you store/share online.

The University of Malta has partnered with Google to offer the Google Apps for Education suite for all students, staff and alumni.

2. I already use Google for my personal email and calendar. What is the difference between Google Apps and the personal email and calendar services provided by Google?

Google Apps for Education and the personal email and calendar services provided by Google are similar. However, students and staff who will be using the Google Apps for Education version will have more features, unlimited space for their emails and documents, more support, and an uptime guarantee.

In addition, the University of Malta's contract with Google specifies that the University of Malta is the controller of all data within the University of Malta Google Apps for Education domain, and meets the requirements of adherence to the Safe Harbor Agreement with respect to data protection. 3. Will my email address change?

The University email address of those students who had started a University course prior to October 2013 was changed from the old username@um.edu.mt format to a new name.surname.xx@um.edu.mt format. All messages sent to the old student email addresses are automatically forwarded to the new email address.

All students who started a course in October 2013 have been allocated the new name.surname.xx@um.edu.mt email address format.

Staff email addresses will NOT change.

4. When will Google Apps be available?

All students have been using Google Apps since the start of academic year 2013/14. All Staff email was migrated during academic year 2013/14.

5. Will there be advertising on the University Google Apps?

There will be no advertising for staff or students within the email, calendaring and other services. You will only see advertising when using the Google search engine and other consumer services.

However, Google reserves the right to display advertising for Alumni. Hence, once students graduate and are no longer current students, they may see advertising within the Google Apps service.

6. Are there any concerns about privacy and data protection when using Google Apps?

7. Can I still use Microsoft Office?

Yes, IT Services will continue to provide and support Microsoft Office. Google Apps will supplement our existing software, not replace it. Microsoft Office will continue to be available on open access workstations and office computers.

8. How will I be migrated to Google Apps?

All University students who had started a University course before October 2013 have already been migrated to Google Apps. Students who started a course in October 2013 are also using Google Apps.
