Getting a University Email Address
All students are provided with a University email address to be used for University-related communication. Notices sent by the University to this address are considered as official notices.
All students registered at the University of Malta are required to activate their UoM IT Account in order to start using their University email address. The UoM IT Account will also provide students with access to IT facilities and services (including IT Services workstations, printing, scanning etc.) and to other resources available on the University campus network.
Activation of the UoM IT Account requires the use of the activation code. This code appears on the letter of acceptance sent to all students by the University. Students who have misplaced their acceptance letter are requested to call personally at IT Services Reception desk. Valid identification (ID Card or Passport) must be presented. Passwords are not sent via email due to security concerns.
The format of a student email address is:
Name: John Borg
Email address: jbor0001@um.edu.mt
Transition from Junior College to University
Students who were allocated a UoM IT Account for Junior College students do not need to re-activate their account when they start their course of studies at the University. They will continue using the same username that was allocated to them during their course of studies at the Junior College. The same username is used to access the services and IT facilities at University. Junior College IT facilities will no longer be accessible.
The Junior College email address will be changed to reflect the University email address format:
jbor0001@jc.um.edu.mt becomes jbor0001@um.edu.mt
Any messages that are sent to the JC email address will be delivered to the University mailbox, i.e. the messages will be automatically forwarded to the University email address.
Students who used Mozilla Thunderbird to check their JC emails need to follow these instructions to update their email address otherwise they will not be able to send emails via Thunderbird.
- Open Mozilla Thunderbird.
- Click Tools menu.
- Click Account Settings... The Account Settings dialog box is displayed.
- Edit your JC email address to the new University format.
- Click OK button.
Students who used the UoM Webmail facility to check their JC emails do not need to take any action.
All JC emails and data files which were available on the JC open access workstations will be accessible through the University open access workstations.
Any printing credits that were available during the student's course of studies at JC can be utilised to print at the University.
Expiry of the University Email Address
The University email address will remain active for the entire duration of studies at University. The notification of expiry of the address will be sent by email.
