The CPA VLE (Course Preparation Area VLE), which was used for the preparation of study-unit material and for exploring the features of the VLE, has been closed down permanently. Instead, a sandbox area is available in the UM VLE, along with the 2015/16, 2016/17 and 2017/18 study-unit areas.

This section contains information about the sandbox area.

  7. How can I transfer the study material in the sandbox area to a study-unit area?

1. What is the sandbox area?

The sandbox area is an area within the UM VLE that can be used for the preparation of study material and for exploring the features of the VLE. By default, all academic staff are automatically assigned one sandbox area.

2. How is the sandbox area different from a study-unit area?

The sandbox area uses a generic name (e.g. Joseph Borg - Sandbox) rather than the official study-unit title. The sandbox area cannot be accessed by students.

Furthermore, it is not possible to use Turnitin assignment activities in the sandbox area.

3. What do I need to do to start using the sandbox area?

Staff who wish to use the sandbox area can access it at any time from the UM VLE, and can immediately start populating it with study resources and activities. No requests are required to start using the sandbox area.

If you share your study-unit with another tutor, read FAQ 4.

4. I teach a study-unit jointly with other tutors. Can we have a sandbox area for this study-unit that is accessible by all the tutors where we can work together?

You are required to fill in the Request Joint Sandbox Area online form to be allocated an area that is accessible by all tutors involved in the study-unit. The joint sandbox area will be allocated within two working days.

5. Can I have more sandbox areas?

By default, all academic staff are automatically assigned one sandbox area. If you require more areas, send an email indicating how many additional areas are required.

6. When will I be able to transfer the study material from the sandbox area to a study-unit area?

Early every September, the study-unit areas for the upcoming academic year are added to the UM VLE (which contains the study-units areas for past academic years). Therefore, you will be able to transfer the material, such as resources and activities, from the sandbox area to the study-unit areas as of the first week of September. You will be notified by email when the new study-unit areas will be available.

7. How can I transfer the study material in the sandbox area to a study-unit area?

The material can be copied from the sandbox area to a study-unit area via the VLE Copy Tool.

8. I have used my sandbox area this year. Will I get a new area next year?

The sandbox area in the UM VLE will remain available for the duration of your employment at University. Once you prepare the material on your sandbox area and copy this to a study-unit area, you probably do not need this material in the sandbox area. You can therefore proceed with deleting the material in the sandbox area for it to be re-used. However, more sandbox areas can be allocated for use if these are required (read FAQ 5).
